Friends of The Library Open House

Last September we had a successful Open House at the Dunsmuir Library. We had raffle prizes and refreshments and book readings. We are looking forward to our next Open House event. Keep an eye out for upcoming news.

Voices in The Canyon

On Saturday August 19th from 2 PM to 4 PM there will be another Voices in The Canyon event at the library. Author Michael Harris will discuss two of his books, Canyon and White Poison. Canyon contains two related stories about the struggles of a family in Dunsmuir in the 1950s and ‘60s. White Poison tells the history of the American West through the eyes of a man who lived through it, but whose understanding of that history is dramatically altered when he encounters Ishi, the last wild Native American in California.

Meet our Board Member

Kevin Tynsky at 41, is the youngest member of the Friends of The Library Board. For him, his volunteer hours are a way of giving back. “I grew up in poor underserved neighborhoods,” he says. “For me, the library was a sanctuary, a safe place.”

Kevin is a husband, father and employee at Dunsmuir Hardware. His resume includes working in concrete construction and as a lumber mill worker. When he was 18, he had an adventurous summer traveling wiht a carnival as a “roustabout,” a jack of all trades.

I grew up in poor underserved neighborhoods. For me, the library was a sanctuary, a safe place.
— Kevin Tynsky, Board Member

Nowadays, Kevin has a new avocation, playing music. You can hear him playing his guitar at some of the openings at Dunsmuir’s Siskiyou Arts Museum.

Library Building Improvements

The building that houses our library has had some ongoing infrastructure issues for a long time and they are unfortunately getting worse. The City Manager said the repairs are top priority, but we are still waiting for the repairs… Many of you know about the long term leak in the SE corner of the library. The city has placed a large blue tarp and roof on the side of the building until repairs can be made. Additionally, every time it rains, the threshold under the back door leaks into the hallway at the back of the library.
